About addiction
And
Research suggests that around 98% of young men are exposed to pornography before the age of 18 and that the average age of first exposure to pornography for boys is between 9 and 11 (See page on research results). Some people move on, beyond the initial motivation of curiosity, boredom, and redemption, and they use pornography as an escape from difficult emotions and thoughts, such as feeling worthless, hurt, or lonely. When this is the case, the foundation is laid for a sexual addiction that locks the person inside an addictive cycle.
Sex addicts, like all other addicts, often have pain in the soul, feel shame and loneliness, and they seek to escape these feelings through addictive behaviors. But that behavior again increases the feeling of shame, loneliness and worthlessness. Escape from shame through addiction, which in turn increases shame, is the endless cycle a sex addict experiences.
Not everyone who is a porn addict is caught in such a cycle. All people have their own story. Some people are not motivated by trauma and shame, but simply caught in a habit and an abuse they cannot escape. However, the addiction and the cause of an addiction can be relatively easily tested to find the best treatment for the person seeking help with their porn addiction.
